WINNERS OF TANZRECHERCHE NRW #13 - KÖLN
"A sensitive duo, irrevocably attuned to the material, with precise, random gestures, "EXUVIE" is a magnificent choreographic piece subtly open to thought.
"By shaping their movements to the slowness of wax, in a unique sequence dictated by the temperature and viscosity of the material, the two men created a breathtakingly moving tableau. Whatever that may mean, "Exuvie" was magnificent.
"Here, wax is the third element of the performance, a veritable star that is first delicately treated, tamed, caressed and gently handled, then shredded, abused and finally rolled into a ball in a large black waxcloth."
"Rarely have we seen such loud and long applause for performances at Wachsfabrik / BarnesCrossing."
Chronicling a troubling mutation, "Exuvie" is a slow trance in which everything is transformed, a total, unprecedented, quasi-scientific experience. The choreography here touches on the very essence of the living arts, where the solidification of matter, 150kg of wax, dictates the rhythm of the dance like a third partner. In scientific language, "exuvia" refers to the envelope left by vertebrates after moulting, their former skin. This moving space-time is underpinned by the pulsating sound of live musicians performing the electro-rock orchestration of this surprising ballet. Elastic, epileptic, the live musical creation features prepared guitar strings alongside underwater pianos and digital crashes. A crossing of bodies stripped of their social habits, subjected to their animality, to finally achieve a new skin.
